Chapter 10

Javier

After Charlotte and Abuela leave in the car with our guards, I follow behind, interested to see how my soon-to-be wife handles the new freedoms I’ve given her. Expecting her to try to run, I’m pleasantly surprised. She seems to know she’s trapped and will never escape me. That and I’m the lesser of two evils, considering her father is a lunatic. Eric treated her like shit from what I can gather, and I think she knows if she gives me a chance, I will treat her well.

Watching her and my grandmother interact as if they are best friends and similar in age is amazing to me. She treats Abuela so respectfully.

Pride fills my chest as I look at the beautiful woman who is going to be my wife. Since Mamá died, my grandmother has been the only person in my life. I can’t wait to have a family with Charlotte. She’s perfect in every way, and I can’t wait to have her take my last name.

I could watch her forever. She’s become more than an obsession. An addiction even. There aren’t words to describe how much I need this woman. I couldn’t let her go even if I wanted to.

Once she gets home and goes into our bedroom, I go down to my office to work. I instruct Isabelle to tell Charlotte to get ready for dinner and make sure she’s on time. Anticipation bubbles up inside me at the thought of spending time with her.

Once she arrives at the dining table, I stand and pull out her chair. When she sits, I bend over, placing my lips on the back of her neck, and kiss her gently. Her hair is pulled up away from her neck, and I can’t resist. Goose bumps ripple across her skin, and it suggests she feels something for me.

Noticing that Charlotte sits at the table and doesn’t eat makes my stomach knot with anxiety. She hasn’t consumed anything since the day she was brought here, other than the water I gave her when she woke up. That realization makes me pay more attention to her. She looks at her plate, pushing the food back and forth with her fork but not really ingesting anything.

“Charlotte, look at me.”

Almost startled, she looks at me with her beautiful blue eyes. I notice they aren’t sparkling, and she has black circles under her eyes. Her lips are dry, and she’s paler than normal.

“When’s the last time that you really ate anything substantial?”

Furrowing her brows, Charlotte answers in almost a whisper, “I don’t remember.”

“Why aren’t you eating?” Even as I ask this I wonder if it’s a way to control me. Going on a hunger strike won’t make me let her go. I’ll simply resort to having a feeding tube placed inside of her by one of our doctors.

This woman is beautiful, with her copper-colored hair, blue eyes, and milky white complexion. She’s a little over five foot tall. Now that I’m really looking, I can tell she’s too thin.
